Containership Incident causes 74 Containers Overboard
Over 70 Containers Fall off into the sea in LA
On Tuesday, 9th September, the container vessel MV Mississippi experienced a significant incident while docked at Long Beach Port in LA, USA. A total of 74 containers collapsed, with many falling into the harbour and onto the quay.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among ship or port personnel, and other port operations remained unaffected.
The MV Mississippi, a Portuguese-flagged vessel owned by MPC Container Ships ASA, had recently arrived from Yantian Port in China. The incident occurred at Pier G, prompting the port operator, International Transportation Service (ITS), to suspend operations at the affected terminal.
ITS stated: “Cargo operations have been temporarily suspended at Pier G, as operations continue to ensure the safety of dockworkers and other Port personnel.”
This event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cargo safety and proper container handling. According to the World Shipping Council (WSC), over 11% of inspected shipments in 2024 contained discrepancies in cargo declarations - a concerning figure that underscores the need for vigilance.
While container losses at sea have declined since 2023, the industry must not become complacent. To support safer practices, the WSC has co-developed the CTU Code Quick Guide and Checklist, offering exporters clear guidance on how to properly pack, transport, and unpack cargo transport units (CTUs), including shipping containers.
